The long-term goals are to eliminate all trade barriers within the EU, improve the economic rfficiency of the EU nations, and stimulate economic growth, thus making the union’s economic more competitive in global markets, particularly against Japan and other Pacific Rim nations, and North America. However, several disputes and debates still divide the member nations, and many barriers to completely free trade remain. Consequently, it may take many years before the EU is truly one deregulated market.
